International Students in Slovenia

International Students in Slovenia

International students in Slovenia can work student jobs under the same conditions as Slovenian students.

We've prepared some key information for international students that's good to know.

1. How to translate our website? 📖

Click the right mouse button or the three dots at the top of your phone and select "Translate" to English or any other language.

The translations won't be perfect, but they will certainly help you in your job search.

2. Students who can work in Slovenia:

  • Those with student status in Slovenia.
  • Those completing study obligations in Slovenia as part of international exchange programs.

3. Do you need a Slovenian bank account?

Yes, to receive your earnings, you must open a Slovenian or EU bank account.

We recommend opening a bank account online: N26 or Revolut.

4.How much do you receive in your bank account if you are a NON-RESIDENT?

Calculation example:

  • You work 20 hours x 10 €/hour gross (6.70 €/hour net for non-residents; pension and disability insurance contributions (PIZ) and income tax advance deducted).
  • You will receive 134.07 € net.

If Slovenia has a signed agreement on avoiding double taxation with your country of origin, you will receive theadvance payment refunded.

  • We've prepared an easy calculator, where you can calculate your payment. When calculating, it's important to select your country of origin.

5. Which amounts are deducted from your payment?

For NON-RESIDENTS of the Republic of Slovenia, the following are deducted from each payment:

  • 13.95% contribution for pension and disability insurance (PIZ). This is not deducted if the foreign national is already covered by compulsory pension and disability insurance on another basis and proves this before the referral is issued with an appropriate certificate from a foreign institution that is no older than 30 days.

  • 22.5% income tax advance (deducted from every payment. This amount can be refunded with KIDO 12 if you come from countries that have a signed agreement on avoiding double taxation with Slovenia).

6.What is KIDO 12?

  • KIDO 12 is a form that allows you, as a non-resident of the Republic of Slovenia, to request a refund of the income tax advance (22.5%).

  • You are entitled to a refund of the advance if you come from one of the countries with which Slovenia has a signed agreement on avoiding double taxation. Calculate and check if your country of origin has a signed agreement.

  • Once you receive the payment in your bank account, you can send us an e-mail requesting the KIDO form.

  • You can request it after each payment, once a month, at the end of the year, or for a period of the last 5 years.

  • You must send the form via the mobile app or take it to FURS.

  • Once FURS approves the refund, they will transfer the deducted advance to your bank account within one month.

TIP: If you are a non-resident and plan to stay in Slovenia for a longer period, you can arrange your Slovenian resident status. More information.

7. To refund the income tax advance, you need:

  • KIDO 12 form. We will send you a pre-filled one once you receive payment; just let us know by e-mail that you need it.
  • Certificate of enrollment.
  • Proof of residency.

Submit all three forms to the Financial Administration of the Republic of Slovenia (FURS), which will refund the income tax advance to your bank account (up to the amount of the special personal allowance valid for that calendar year). FURS may ask you to provide additional documents.

8. Where do you get a residency decision in Slovenia if you come from abroad?

If you come from abroad and would like to arrange your residency in Slovenia, you can get the decision at the Financial Administration of the Republic of Slovenia (FURS).

At FURS you fill out a questionnaire and receive the decision within 14 days (in some cases, you might have to wait up to 3 months).

Once you receive the decision, let us know so that your next payment will be the full amount without income tax deducted (only 13.95% for pension and disability insurance will be deducted).

9. Which tax reliefs are you entitled to if you are a non-resident?

You are entitled to a special personal allowance.

10. Do you need health insurance if you come from abroad and work in the Republic of Slovenia?

We recommend arranging compulsory health insurance in accordance with the legislation of the Republic of Slovenia and EU provisions, as treatment costs may arise in case of injury.

To arrange compulsory health insurance, contact the Health Insurance Institute of Slovenia (ZZZS).
