Student Work in Slovenia: A Complete Guide for International Students

Student Work in Slovenia: A Complete Guide for International Students

Objavljeno: 22. 5. 2026

International students in Slovenia can work student jobs under the same conditions as Slovenian students. We've prepared some key information for international students that's good to know.

How to browse our website in English?

Click the right mouse button or the three dots on your phone and choose "Translate" to English or any other language. It’s not perfect, but it helps with your job search.

Who can work through Student Service?

  • Those with student status in Slovenia.
  • Those completing study obligations in Slovenia as part of international exchange programs.

How to join e-Student Service?

Register for free on our website – no need to visit our office in person.

Once registered, you can browse job listings and order referrals directly from your profile.

Do you need a Slovenian bank account?

Yes, to receive your earnings, you must open a Slovenian or EU bank account. We recommend opening a bank account online: N26 or Revolut.

How to order a referral (napotnica)?

Before you start working, you must order a referral (napotnica) – this is the legal basis for student work in Slovenia. Without it, you cannot work.

Before you start, agree with your employer on:

  • hourly rate (gross/net),
  • work duration and schedule,
  • expected payment date.

Tip: Before starting work, you can check if the employer is a regular payer at neplacniki.info.

How much will you receive in your bank account?

Calculation example:

  • You work 20 hours x 10 €/hour gross (6.70 €/hour net for non-residents; pension and disability insurance contributions (PIZ) and income tax advance deducted).
  • You will receive 134.07 € net.

If Slovenia has a signed agreement on avoiding double taxation with your country of origin, you will receive the advance payment refunded.

  • We've prepared an easy calculator, where you can calculate your payment. When calculating, it's important to select your country of origin.

Good to know: The legal minimum hourly rate for student work in Slovenia is currently 8.98 € gross.

What is deducted from your payment?

For NON-RESIDENTS of the Republic of Slovenia, the following are deducted from each payment:

  • 13.95 % contribution for pension and disability insurance (PIZ). This is not deducted if the foreign national is already covered by compulsory pension and disability insurance on another basis and proves this before the referral is issued with an appropriate certificate from a foreign institution that is no older than 30 days.

  • 22.5 % income tax advance (deducted from every payment). This amount can be refunded with KIDO 12 if you come from countries that have a signed agreement on avoiding double taxation with Slovenia.

What is KIDO 12 and who is eligible?

KIDO 12 is a form that allows non-residents of Slovenia to request a refund of the 22.5 % income tax advance, which is deducted from your student work earnings.

To be eligible, you must come from a country that has signed a double taxation agreement with Slovenia (specifically covering income from student work),

  • Use our student work calculator to check your net payout and if your country qualifies."

How to request the KIDO 12 form?

You can request the KIDO 12 form after receiving payment for your student work. Just send us an e-mail and we’ll send the form to you.

You can request the form after each payment, once per month, at the end of the year or for the last 5 years.

How to submit the KIDO 12 form?

You need to send the following documents to the Financial Administration of the Republic of Slovenia (FURS):

  • KIDO 12 form and specification of amounts (we will send you a pre-filled one once you receive payment; just let us know by e-mail that you need it.)

  • Proof of education (school or university)

  • Proof of tax residency from your home country (obtained in your country);

  • If you are over 26 years old, attach a certificate of first enrollment in studies.

Submit these documents to the Financial Administration of the Republic of Slovenia (FURS) or use the eTaxes app.

Using the eDavki app will speed up the process.

Once approved, FURS will return the tax advance to your bank account, usually within one month, up to the amount of the special personal allowance for that calendar year.

TIP: If you are a non-resident and plan to stay in Slovenia for a longer period, you can arrange your Slovenian resident status.

How to arrange tax residency in Slovenia?

If you come from abroad and would like to arrange your tax residency in Slovenia, you can get the decision at the Financial Administration of the Republic of Slovenia (FURS).

At FURS you fill out a questionnaire and receive the decision within 14 days (in some cases, you might have to wait up to 3 months).

Once you receive the decision, let us know so that your next payment will be the full amount without income tax deducted (only 13.95% for pension and disability insurance will be deducted).

Which tax reliefs are you entitled to?

You are entitled to a special personal allowance.

Do you need health insurance?

We recommend arranging compulsory health insurance in accordance with the legislation of the Republic of Slovenia and EU provisions, as treatment costs may arise in case of injury.

To arrange compulsory health insurance, contact the Health Insurance Institute of Slovenia (ZZZS).
